What is Electronic Data Interchange?
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is the computer-to-computer exchange of business documents in a standard electronic format between business partners.
By creating the documents in electronic format, the business process can be automated, to take out human intervention where it has become inefficient and repetitive and is a fantastic way to leverage technology.
EDI is only really the definition about the overlying content with basic background about the technology – Integration but with standards.

ANSI X12 – Mainly US Based
ODETTE – Car Industry
TRADACOMS – ANA – UK Retail
From these came EDIFACT – UN Standard but mainly Europe.
GS1 –GS1UK
VDA – German Automotive
And refer to probably every business document you could think of.
